Rural Development

Predominantly an agrarian economy, India lives in its villages. Approximately 70% of the country’s population dwells in rural and semi-urban areas. Since independence, it has been the aim of every ruling government to urbanise these areas. Reforms have been introduced and funds have been allocated, but no development has been seen in more than fifty years. C T Ravi is all set for an era of change and development. He believes that mere introduction of reforms and allocation of funds do not help in uplifting a rural community. According to him, change begins with education. Educating the rural folk about health, sanitation, and government policies and amenities can go a long way in improving their general living conditions. He also believes that encouraging small-scale industries in rural areas can speed up development and empower the people by providing them with secure jobs.

Of late, rural development has become synonymous with agricultural development. Although C T Ravi has been deeply involved in elevating the status of farmers in Karnataka, he opines that improvements in agriculture alone will not boost rural development – there has to be a more holistic approach in dealing with the issue. He is working towards achieving this goal, and is striving for the betterment of all the people living in rural areas.
